How to apply and pass Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) Certification

The Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) certification is a prestigious credential awarded by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). It signifies expertise in fraud prevention, detection, and investigation. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to obtain your CFE certification:


1. Join the ACFE

Before you can apply for the CFE Exam, you must become an Associate member of the ACFE. Here's how to join:

  • Visit the ACFE Website: Go to the ACFE membership page.

  • Fill Out the Application: Complete the online membership application form.

  • Pay the Membership Fee: Pay the annual membership fee.

2. Meet the Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to take the CFE Exam, you must meet certain academic and professional criteria:

  • Academic Requirements: You need at least a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution of higher education. If you don’t have a bachelor’s degree, you can substitute two years of professional experience for each year of academic study.

  • Professional Experience: You must have at least two years of professional experience in a field related to fraud detection and prevention, such as accounting, auditing, criminology, loss prevention, or law.

3. Prepare for the CFE Exam

Proper preparation is key to passing the CFE Exam. The ACFE provides a range of study materials to help you prepare:

  • CFE Exam Prep Course: This is a comprehensive self-study program designed to help you prepare for the exam at your own pace.

  • Fraud Examiners Manual: This manual is the definitive reference for anti-fraud professionals and is included in the CFE Exam Prep Course.

  • Practice Questions: Utilize the practice questions and tests available through the CFE Exam Prep Course to familiarize yourself with the format and types of questions on the exam.

4. Apply for the CFE Exam

Once you are confident in your preparation, you can apply for the CFE Exam:

  • Complete the CFE Exam Application: Download and complete the application form available on the ACFE website.

  • Submit the Application: Submit your completed application, along with any required supporting documents, to the ACFE.

  • Pay the Exam Fee: Pay the exam fee when you submit your application.

5. Schedule and Take the CFE Exam

After your application is approved, you can schedule your exam:

  • Exam Format: The CFE Exam is a computer-based test consisting of four sections: Financial Transactions and Fraud Schemes, Law, Investigation, and Fraud Prevention and Deterrence.

  • Scheduling the Exam: You can schedule your exam at a time and location convenient for you. The exam is administered through Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide.

6. Pass the CFE Exam

To earn your CFE certification, you must pass all four sections of the exam. Each section can be taken separately and must be completed within a 30-day window. The passing score for each section is 75%.

7. Maintain Your Certification

Once you become a CFE, you must maintain your certification through continuing professional education (CPE):

  • CPE Requirements: CFEs are required to earn a minimum of 20 CPE credits annually, with at least 10 of these credits related to fraud examination.

  • Renewal: You must renew your ACFE membership annually and report your CPE credits to maintain your certification.
